The victim of a weekend shooting is speaking out, now that police say the gunman is behind bars.

Detective Ric Roush said 21 year-old Roberto Brooks of Zanesville was taken into custody shortly after 1:30 Saturday afternoon- that’s when officers arrived to the scene of Ridge and Schaum Avenues after a report of shots fired.

"When our officers arrived there were two individuals involved in a physical altercation," explained Roush. "Upon investigation it was determined that one of the individuals had actually fired a hand gun at the other."

Roush said the shooter and victim were in close proximity of one another when at least 2 gunshots were fired, none of which hit the 19-year-old victim, Justin Duesenberry of Zanesville. Duesenberry said Brooks is the uncle of his 8 month-old daughter and that they have had an on-going dispute.

"I don’t’ know he just mug me every time he seen me," explained Duesenberry. "I told him you got a problem with me come see me, and he pulled up with a gun and pulled it right out as soon as he pulled up, started shooting."

Roush said Brooks is being charged with one count of felonious assault with a gun specification, one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.

Brooks is being held in the city jail. The case will be presented to a Muskingum County Grand Jury Wednesday morning.
