H.S. Boys Basketball:

Zanesville 52 Marietta 47

The Blue Devils get win number one on the year and their first ECOL league win with a five point victory over Marietta. Zanesville trailed after every quarter, but played a sound game down the stretch to preserve the victory. Coach Scott Aronhalt’s bunch jumped out to a 30-23 lead three minutes into the third quarter, the biggest lead for either team in the game. Marietta then called a timeout, and went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at thirty. The young Devils refused to fold, hitting free throws down the stretch to salt the game away. Jake Phillis led the Blue Devils with 13 points, followed by Christian Meyers with 11, and Granger Long, who recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Zanesville also took much better care of the basketball, committing only five turnovers as opposed to the 15 they gave up against East Liverpool. The Blue Devils are back at it tomorrow night, on the road against Massillon Jackson.

Sheridan 52 New Lexington 43

The Generals survived a late rally from the Panthers and held on for a 52-43 victory in The Jungle.  After an opening three from New Lexington, Sheridan closed the quarter on a 20-2 run to lead 20-5.  When the Panthers cut it to 12 with under two minutes to go, the Generals hit two threes to double up New Lex at the half 36-18.  The Panthers chipped into the deficit and got as close as three with the ball with under three minutes to go, but would get no closer as the Generals sealed it from the line.  Jacob Horsley and Matthew Freville led Sheridan with 18 and 13 points respectively.  Ethan Kunkler had 13 points in the loss.
