Charities Need Help All Year

Charitable organizations receive extra help during the holiday season, but donations are needed throughout the year.

Terina Saxton of the Salvation Army said she’s relieved the Christmas dinner and clothing distribution day were both successful, but it’s already time to start focusing on what’s next for the organization.  Saxton is asking everyone to drop off unwanted items that may have been replaced by Christmas gifts.

"A gentleman called me and said he got a new TV for Christmas, and he wanted to donate his old one," said Saxton.  "He told me he thought about the Salvation Army because we do so much for everybody."

As the weather gets colder, the Salvation Army sees an increase in demand for blankets, coats, hats, gloves and scarves.  Canned food items are also being collected in preparation for the homeless walk next month.

"We have all kinds of volunteers that come and help with this," said Saxton.  "We have backpacks full of food, tissues, gloves, hats, a blanket, and if we see a place where somebody has been staying and left, then we’ll leave the backpack."

If you’re interested in volunteering or wish to drop off donations, you can stop by the Salvation Army.
