Firefighters on Christmas Duty

Not everyone had the day off from work on Sunday.  Even on Christmas, law enforcement and emergency personnel continue to serve the community.

The Zanesville Fire Department is fully staffed on holidays.  Firefighters work a 24 hour shift every three days, and this Christmas, Kenny Jones said it was his turn to be on duty.

"We’re here every day," said Jones.  "We know each other’s wives and kids, so we all just get together as a big family."

Firefighters and their families feasted on turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and chocolate pie.  Jones said he enjoys his job, so he doesn’t mind being at the station on a holiday.  He said it’s impossible to predict how busy any given day will be.

"Some years we have an oven fire when somebody’s turkey overflows or smokes up a little bit," said Jones.

Jones said cooking-related fires are common on Christmas, and he reminds everyone to keep fresh batteries in smoke detectors.  All of the fire departments in Muskingum County provide free smoke detectors to anyone who needs one.
