Friends and Family gathered to say goodbye to a former Fire Chief in New Concord on Friday.
Richard King Cole, Sr. passed away Monday at OSU Medical Center in Columbus after a battle with cancer.
The former Fire Chief served in the Ohio National Guard, and was also a former town council member and Boy Scout leader.
Current New Concord Fire Chief, Brent Gates, talked about the tradition of firefighting that runs in the Cole family, and what It meant for the Fire Department to give back their former comrade.
"His father before him, his son, his grandson, other grandson, and other son, who’s also on the fire department. So, he had a great tradition with the New Concord Fire Department." said, Gates. "We were asked by the family. It was a great honor for our fire department to pay tribute and celebrate the life of Chief Cole."
Mourners, along with members of New Concord Fire Department were in attendance for the service, held in the very building Cole helped put together.
Chief Gates said they made sure Cole received the fire fighters funeral he deserved.
"He was a charter member of our hall of fame, and everything. Once a member, always a member of our fire department. you know he never left us even though he may have retired."
Memorial contributions can me made to either the New Concord Fire Department, or the Muskingum Valley Red Cross.
Cole leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Eileen, 5 children and 12 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cole was 76 years old.
