Those who love snow haven’t had a lot of enjoyment this winter season. But, for the Zanesville Street Department the lack of the white stuff means a lot of green.
In December 2010 there was 282 hours of overtime combine that with salt and fuel costs and the city ended up paying almost $26,000. This year, there has only been 22 hours of overtime with no salt used and $1,700 spent on fuel.
"The only is we have to buy salt. We get it by state purchase and it’s $60 a ton," said Public Service Director Mike Sims. "We’re obligated to buy 800 tons. We’re going to have to spend $48,000 on salt even if it is just stock piling it."
Currently, the city has 900 tons of salt which Sims said should get them through the bulk of the winter season. While the city is seeing savings on salt, the annual leaf collection was somewhat costly.
"We have over $41,000 in labor, fuel and materials and that was with us finding someone to successfully take the leaves and that was a surprise that we were able to work with a company that will use them to incorporate into their top soil," said Sims.
If the leaves had to go to a landfill the leaf collection would have cost the city, $60,000. Sims said they should be on budget for this year though it will be tight.
