A friendly competition is stirring up an age-old rivalry between Zanesville and Newark.

The United Way is kicking off its first-ever "Mobile Community Challenge".  The Blue Devils basketball team takes on the Wildcats this weekend, and fans can use their cell phones to make a donation via text message.  Executive Director of the United Way Meg Deedrick said the school that raises the most money wins the challenge.

"We thought this would be a fun way to feed the rivalry, which has been going on for years, in a new way," said Deedrick.  "It’s also a way to benefit both communities at a time when they need it most."

The United Way wants to reach out to a tech-savvy audience.  Deedrick said so far Zanesville is trailing behind Newark, but regardless of which team wins, all proceeds will be put to good use.

"This money will be invested in the community in the areas of stabilizing income, access to health care, education and social services safety nets, so people know that their money will be invested wisely," said Deedrick.

To make a $10 donation, text "UNITE" (space) "Z" for Zanesville or "UNITE" (space) "N" for Newark and send the message to 8-5-9-4-4.  The results will be announced at the game on Saturday.
