A Rowing Association coming to the area, could mean a boost in the local economy.
The Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association has chosen Dillon Lake to be their permanent location for hosting Regatta events. The events consist of a 2,000 meter rowing course.
"The association has pin pointed Dillon because it is, in their words, a perfect location for their Regatta," said Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce Vice President Kelly Ashby. "The beach is a wonderful location for a staging area, the portion of the river that they want to use is the right length."
The association plans to host two trial events during March and April. Ashby said if these events are a success there is potential for additional Regattas as well as an economic impact to the community.
"They bring team mates, they bring family, so it’s a huge group that would come in to view the Regattas," said Ashby. "So we’re talking restaurants, hotels, retail, gas stations, so a great benefit to the Muskingum County business."
An example of the possible impact – In 2010 the Rowing Association held their Championship at Lake Harsha. The event brought in more than 6,000 visitors, with an estimated million dollar impact to Claremont County.
The Rowing Association is asking for the communities input. A public question and answer meeting will take place Tuesday the 17th at noon in the lower level of the Zanesville Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce offices.
