Students packed Zane Grey Elementary School Tuesday to put the superior spelling skills to the test.
The annual Zanesville City Schools District-Wide Spelling Bee featured fifteen students from fourth through eighth grades from Bishop Fenwick Schools as well as Zanesville City’s middle and elementary schools.
The top three finishers received trophies, and the top two spellers each received an additional gift certificate from Century National Bank.
This year, 1st place went to Tyler Gibson, a 6th grade student from John McIntyre Elementary, with the word, "Slantindicular."
Gibson said he already has plans on how to spend his one hundred dollar gift certificate:
"I think I’m going to use it to buy, ‘Sonic: Generations’ for the X-Box," said Gibson.
Gibson will now taken an online test, and if selected will move on to compete at the regional spelling bee in Athens.
From there, he could find a spot at the state or national competition.
