Exotic Animal Legislation

This week State Senator Troy Balderson hoped to introduce legislation to crackdown on exotic animal ownership in Ohio.

However, the senator said some concerns with the bill stalled plans and he realizes for many this is an emotional and complicated issue.

"We’re talking about property rights. We’re talking about public safety and all those things are important," said Senator Balderson. "We understand those things. We just need to put something in place so that people can do what they need to do, but also do it in a safe manor."

As the proposal is currently written, those that have exotic animals will be able to keep them, but they’ll face new rules in order to do so, but no one will be able to purchase new animals.

"I have gone throughout the state and I’ve been to several places. There are really some people that are playing by the rules and doing it correctly," said Balderson. "I don’t think we should penalize them. They understand what we’re trying to do and they understand the public safety issue."

Senator Balderson said that members of the legislature will meet again Friday afternoon to further fine tune rules and regulations. He said as it stands the Director of Agriculture will be in charge of enforcing any new legislation.
