A local Girl Scout troop needs your help sending cards to soldiers overseas.

Members of Girl Scout Troop #1794 spent after-school time at John McIntire Elementary writing cards and making other items to send along with cookies to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan.

Troop leader Sarah Gantzer said the project is in honor of the 100th anniversary of the organization’s existence.

"In our troop meeting we talked about what service projects we wanted to do, since it was the 100th anniversary, we want to do something really special. and my daughter said she has a couple of friends who have parents over in Afghanistan, their moms actually, and that is just close to her heart, and so she said, let’s send cookies," said Gantzer.

Money for the cookies was donated to the troop by the Gold & Slver Pawn Shop, featured on the History Channel series, "Pawn Stars."

Gantzer said even with the donation to purchase cookies, the troop still needs to raise money to ship them.

"We are hoping that maybe we might get some support from the community, and maybe businesses or just people in the community night be able to help out with donations for the shipping; that’s going to be the most difficult challenge we have right now is to get them shipped over there," added Gantzer

If you are interested in making a donation to the Girl Scouts, you can send donations to the Zanesville Service Center; care of Girl Scout troop #1794.
