One local club rewarded area students for their writing skills Tuesday night.
The Zanesville Sertoma Club hosted their annual Freedom Week Essay Contest. All eighth graders in the county wrote a 300 word essay on their freedoms and responsibilities as a U.S. citizen, and the winners were honored at a dinner. Commissioner Jerry Lavy said the kids enjoy the writing project, because there is motivation to win.
"Winners from those perspective schools receive a 50 dollar cash award, and then the sertoma club committee, for this project, picks the overall winner, and then they receive an additional 100 dollars."
Lavy said he enjoys reading the essays, and each time, the committee continues to be impressed.
"Believe me, each year it gets harder and harder. I know, the committee, to select the, overall winner is getting harder, because they do such a splendid job, that, it’s remarkable," said Lavy.
The Outstanding Essay Winner was Madison Paul from West Muskingum Middle School.
