The Zanesville Fire Department continues to investigate Sunday’s fire-related fatality.

The fire, on 50 Green Street, resulted in the first fire fatality in Zanesville since 2007. The victim is identified as 52-year-old Jerry Miller and he was taken to Licking County for an autopsy, as the cause of death is undetermined.  No one else was  in the home at the time of the fire.

Fire Chief Craig Stemm said that when ZFD arrived to the scene, the roof had collapsed on the back of the structure.  Crews attempted to get in through the front door, but most of the floor had burnt away.

"It appears accidental, we haven’t seen anything else. We’re waiting on autopsy results out of Licking County to see if there could have been possibly any foul play, but at this time it appears accidental, and still undetermined at this time," said Stemm.

The neighboring house suffered damages to the its siding, but no one else was injured.

ZFD, as well as the Zanesville Police Department, are continuing the investigation. Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Thomas said it could be days before the cause is determined.

Sunday’s blaze is the 20th fire-related fatality reported in the state this year.
