The old Muskingum County Home across from Zane State College and Ohio University Zanesville was reduced to rubble Friday.
A few spectators watched, including Richard Kirkendall as sections of the building on Newark Road came down in a cloud of dust.
He said he and his brothers have many fond memories of the building from their childhood.
"When we were kids, this was out playground. We just had a ball over here. I got three brothers, and we had our BB guns, and we would have our wars right here on their property," said Kirkendall.
Kirkendall explained that he had a paper route that included the County Home.
The building has stood as a staple for Kirkendall, who is sad to see it go.
"It’s going to be a friend that we’re losing. Because it seems like it was always here, and it never was an eyesore, but they came out, and had their demolition team come out, and try to do their fire stuff," added Kirkendall
The building is not coming down easily for construction workers.
Kirkendall tell us that machinery brought in to tear down the building has broken down on more than one occasion.
