A benefit for one area girl is also helping others around the nation fighting Mitochondrial Disease.

The 8th annual "Bet on Baylee" fundraiser was held Saturday at the Roseville Community Center to benefit 12 year-old, Baylee Thompson

Baylee’s mother, Jody Thompson said the idea to raise money for her daughter grew out of a passion for poker.

"We were playing poker all the time, and we just decided to make this an event for Baylee, due to her condition, which is Mitochondrial Disease. It has been incorporated to not only poker, which we just got done running, but we have live and silent auctions as well," said Thompson.

Baylee spent the afternoon riding around with her mom during the event in a red wagon.

According to Thompson, every thirty seconds a child will be diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease.Kara Strittmatter from the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation said much like "Bet on Baylee," fundraisers start with community efforts.

"The foundation has been built on events like this, the special events. The grassroots has really taken us to this level. We’ve funded nearly $8 million in research," said Strittmatter.
