The change in seasons means problems for those who suffer from allergies…
Spring has sprung over the past few weeks and plants are in bloom. Dr. Vicki Whitacre of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department said there’s a certain substance that comes with them and it’s causing some trouble.
"Right now, what’s bothering people is mostly pollen. A little bit from grass, but mostly pollen from all the trees, bushes, flowers…And it’s come early, at least a month earlier than usual because of our very warm winter," said Whitacre.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, pollen tends to stick to you’re hair and clothing. Whitacre said to make sure you shower and wash your clothes immediately, and to take medication for extreme cases.
"Benadryl has been the standard for many years, but it makes a lot of people sleepy, and there are new, what were prescription medications now available over the counter in the last few years…Things like Claritin or Zyrtec, or the generic brands of those which are sometimes less expensive."
Whitacre said people with asthma should pay special attention to daily pollen counts.
