With Easter coming up this weekend, animal experts are warning pet owners about the dangers of the contents of their Easter baskets.

Executive Director of the Animal Shelter in Muskingum County, Larry Hostetler said chocolate can be hazardous to your pet’s health– even deadly.

"If you’re making chocolates at home, and you use, baking chocolate, or un-processed chocolate, that is almost lethal, so you should always keep that up, if you’re making chocolates," said Hostetler.

Hostetler said chocolate poisoning can vary on the quantity of chocolate consumed and the size of your pet, but animals showing any symptoms of sickness should be taken to the vet.

"Keep a close eye on them, is they see signs of the animal becoming sick– vomiting becoming lethargic, call a veterinarian right away, and get the animal in to be examined," added Hostetler.

Hostetler said that animals are attracted to the sweet smell of chocolate, much like humans are, and recommends keeping Easter baskets away from low areas where pets can reach them.
