Leave a Penny

The Zanesville Civic League hopes a small donation will turn into big dollars for their organization.

Next week the Zanesville Civic League will accept donations of pennies in hopes of covering half of their gym floor, in a program called, "Pennies at Work." The money raised will go towards supporting after school programs, their REACH program that helps students at Zanesville Middle School and their basketball league, among others.

If they can fill up the 2,000 square feet with pennies that would mean $5,000.

"We concentrate a lot on academics, reading, exercise, education," explained Executive Director Howard Stewart. "We try to show the kids the right direction they go. We do a lot with life skills, teaching them the basics they need to survive."

Some of the students involved are donating some of their spring break vacation to come in and count the pennies.

"It’s a far stretch, but we’re going to give it a shot. It’s a lot of pennies," said Stewart. "You can do it in cash and buy one square. One square is $2.50. That’s how many pennies fit into a 12 by 12 square."

If you would like to make a donation you can do so by dropping off pennies between 9am-5pm April 9-13th. Those donating cash will have their names placed on a certificate for each square they purchase.

Stewart said that they are at 6 percent of their goal right now.
