UPDATE: Motorcycle Accident on South River Road

by WHIZ Reporter on April 13, 2012 at 9:05 am

An injury accident involving a motorcycle sent two people to the hospital late Friday afternoon.

Trooper Bill Duerson of the State Highway Patrol tells WHIZ that 52-year-old John Briggs was traveling south-bound on his Honda Goldwing motorcycle on State Route 60 collided with a white Saturn L300 driven by 18-year-old Joshua Sheets, who was trying to turn left onto Route 719.

Both the driver of the motorcycle and the driver of the car were taken to Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital.  It is unknown what the extent of their injuries were.

Duerson said he did not believe the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, but charges will not be issued until the investigation is complete.

"That’s still being investigated at this point in time," said Duerson.  "We do have some witnesses, and I’m not ready to lay blame at this point just given the severity of the accident. There have been some conflicting stories."

Duerson said with the warmer weather, drivers will see an increase in motorcycles on the roadway.

"Drivers have got to be on the lookout for Motorcycles," he added.  "Whenever any type of car comes into a crash with a motorcycle, the motorcycle is going to lose, no matter what."

The accident caused traffic back-ups on Route 60 and the east-bound lane of 719 was also closed down while officers investigated the scene.
