The Colony Square Mall is hosting an event designed to provide health screenings and information to the public.
The annual Health Expo kicked off Friday as part of a two-day event featuring local healthcare organizations. Jennifer Hiestand of the Zanesville-Muskingum County Health Department said there is more than just information available for visitors.
"We have about 30 health-related organizations here, to display what services they provide, and provide free health screenings, testing, and there’s also a lot of giveaways and prizes," said Hiestand
Hiestand said the mall is a convenient place to get the attention of those who put off going to the doctor for screenings.
"People who think, "I’ve been thinking about getting screened for this and that, and it’s convenient, it’s here at the mall, and it’s free." So they will come down and finally do that, or people who are just walking through the mall and say, Oh, well this is right here, I’ve been thinking about that… maybe I should do that," added Hiestand.
According to Hiestand, fear is a big factor for those who aren’t screened for health problems, especially when people know that they haven’t been exercising or eating healthy.
"There’s a lot of diseases– heart disease, stroke and cancer that can be prevented by just doing little things, like exercising more, and eating right, and not smoking, getting vaccinated for diseases," explained Hiestand.
The event runs until 9 p.m. Friday and starts again at 10a.m. Saturday.
