After years of planning and fundraising, financial plans for the Muskingum Recreation Center are
ready to be finalized.
Muskingum County Community Foundation Executive Director David Mitzel updated members of the Zanesville Noon Rotary Club about the plans, which he said have been in the works for over 5 years.
Mitzel also serves as the treasurer of the Recreation Center, and said the idea was proclaimed by Bob Joseph on April 25th 2007.
"We need to do a recreation center. It won’t get done without the Muskingum County Community Foundation. That’s when it started out, and we’ve been working on it since," said Mitzel.
Plans call for a gymnasium as well as indoor and outdoor pools, and will be located at Ohio University’s Zanesville Campus.
The cost of the project is estimated at $10.5 million, however Mitzel said thanks to a tax credit, they will only have to repay $2.5 million on the loan.
"The new market tax credits are sold to the company that gets more value than their investment. It’s really a nice way to finance a project," added Mitzel.
Mitzel’s Muskingum County Community Foundation, along with Genesis Healthcare System, the Muskingum Valley YMCA, and OU-Z are expected to close on the project next month.
