Small business owners in Zanesville spent the day Wednesday learning what part they will play in the shale oil and gas supply chain.

Ohio Oil & Gas Association partnered with the Zanesville-Muskingum County Chamber of Commerce and ShaleDirectories.com to host an educational seminar for local businesses to get a better understanding of the industry.

"How to do business with the industry as far as what kind of insurance requirements there are, the safety requirements, what a master service agreement is. Trying to educate the small business owners in the area to be able to work with the large companies as they move into the state," said Kristy Hawthorne with OOGA.

Representatives from companies like the Marcellus Resource Group and Halliburton spoke at the seminar. Hawthorne said the process is just as educational for the large oil and gas companies.

"It’s important for them to use local companies and the local workforce, which we are encouraging, but it’s important for the local companies to understand the industry, and how to present themselves to those large companies to get those contracts."

About 100 people from area businesses attended Wednesday’s seminar.
