The abuse of prescription drugs is becoming more and more common…

Overdose drug deaths by prescription painkillers are now the leading cause of accidental death in Ohio. Muskingum Behavioral Health’s Steve Carrel said it’s becoming a lot easier for people to get ahold of prescription drugs.

"From surveys that have been done, most people, especially young people, start using opiates that they get from family, friends… not a doctor. It’s not the seedy drug dealer going around, lurking around… it’s in people’s homes, and folks need to wake up and realize what’s going on," said Carrel.

Carrel is working to create a drug task force to help reduce and eliminate the use of prescription drugs in the county. He said people who abuse them will exhibit certain behaviors.

"If a person is running out of their prescriptions ahead of time. They’re acting differently. They get real freaky if, you know, it’s like, ‘I got to get ahold of my doctor to get my ‘script’, you know."

So far, close to 30 people have made the commitment to be a part of the drug task force.
