The arrival of the shale oil and gas industry brings up questions as to how our area will be impacted…

To answer those questions, the United Way is hosting "Shale Oil and Gas 101 May 9th at the John McIntire Library Auditorium. Community Impact Coordinator Amy Davis said the oil fracking is already affecting areas locally.

"Rental properties are scarce, hotels are being booked up, there’s a lot more traffic, and that is possibly coming to our area in the next couple of years, and we want to be able to provide that information, so that everyone know what’s happening, not just landowners, not just business owners," said Davis.

Some of the guest speakers include Mike Jacoby from the Port Authority and State Senator Troy Balderson. Davis said the event is for the public, but also for the new businesses the industry will bring.

"To make these companies kind of feel welcomed, too, in our area, because it could mean a lot more revenue for our area and a lot of positive changes. So, we want to provide that basic information… An education piece, really, for everyone."

The event takes place from 6 to 7:30pm and is free to attend.
