Sewer Project to Close Roads

Downtown Zanesville will see some construction activity over the next couple of weeks.

Market Street will be closed from Second to Third Street beginning on Monday.  Public Service Director Mike Sims said the city is working on a sewer project.

"The first thing that we need to do is minimize the river intrusion," said Sims.  "When the river comes up after a series of flood events, it puts the outlet of this storm sewer under water, and it actually allows river water to get into our system."

As a result, Sims said the water treatment plant is unnecessarily treating river flow.  This project will help solve that problem, and it’s part of a larger initiative by the Environmental Protection Agency to eliminate combined sewers by 2022.

"It won’t have any impact at all on anybody’s water or sewer services," said Sims.  "We’ll be maintaining that through the duration of the project.  It will simply be some access issues for a couple of businesses, and we’ll have to reroute the way some of their employees come in to park."

Access to Zane’s Landing Park will be maintained using Second Street and Main Street.  Sims said the completion date depends on the weather.
