The beautiful weather made for a great time at Zane’s Landing Park Sunday.

Hundreds turned out to hear the bold sound of the Dick Simcox Big Band.

Band leader Richard Simcox said the band has been around for over 40 years and plays many different events including weddings, bah mitzvahs and other private events.

"We like to try to get in here every year, after the Memorial Band season, and we’ve got about half of this group that plays with the memorial band," said Simcox.

Sunday evening’s musical selections featured a tribute to the greatest generation, as quoted by former NBC Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw, as well as music from the World War II era.

Simcox said the big band style is not only a crowd pleaser, but the style gives instrumentalists the chance to add their own flare to a piece during a solo.

"It’s a big ensemble, there’s only one person on a part usually and the kids like that responsibility of making their personal contribution, plus in jazz, there’s the improvisational factor, the spontaneous composition on their solos," added Simcox.

The band is made up of close to 20 members, including WHIZ’s own, Sheila Blake.
