It takes a lot to get kids ready for the school year from new shoes to backpacks and supplies.
Thursday, Eastside Community Ministry handed out over 750 backpacks filled with gear to help families with the mounting costs during their "Tools for School" event. Volunteers are a big part of helping make the day a success.
"It’s great especially when you actually give them the backpacks," said Rosecrans Senior Thomas Boggs. "They are so happy they are already starting to unwrap them to see what kind they got or what’s in them. It’s a great feeling."
Houston Rockets and Zanesville native Kevin Martin gave his time as well to hand out backpacks. He said he hoped his presence draws attention to the importance of working hard.
"I just want to give them the extra motivation to want to be in school and it’s just an overall great event,"said Martin.
All the items given out were either donated or purchased from money given to the cause. The ministry works with schools and teachers to determine the most needed items.
Zane State students also volunteered as well.
