It’s an unusual case involving a woman found burned in the middle of the road in an isolated area.
A 911 call into the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office describes the scene as a passerby finds a 29-year-old Canton woman in the roadway. The caller tells operators that the woman was burnt, raped and beat up. She was found in the middle of Keyes Road and Steel Hill Road in Muskingum County.
Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said the woman remains in the burn trauma unit of Ohio State University Medical Center with fourth degree burns over the majority of her body. Doctors tell the sheriff the next 48 hours will be critical.
"This was not a random act. There was a vehicle that they were looking for that interested us and we found that last night in the Canton area," said Sheriff Matt Lutz. "There are some people of interest that we are currently looking for."
Sheriff Lutz said they’ll continue to investigate in the Canton area over the next few days. The vehicle is currently being processed for evidence. They also feel they’ve found the location locally of where the crime occurred and will try and create a timetable of events. They’ll also try and determine why she was in the area.
"You have to have evidence to support what happened and we think we have a grasp of two or three different scenarios that we’re not prepared to release yet," said Lutz.
The Sheriff’s Office asks anyone with any information into this case to contact their office at (740) 452-3637. The name of the man who called 911 is being withheld at the request of the Sheriff’s Office.
