A woman is dead following an accident that shut down both eastbound lanes of Interstate 70.

The State Highway Patrol and National Trail Fire Department responded to the crash just after 7 p.m. at mile marker 145 past the Gratiot exit.  Sergeant Chuck Merryman said a Honda Civic traveling westbound crossed the median and struck a tractor trailer head-on traveling in the opposite direction.

"We do have at least one confirmed victim that passed away at the scene," said Merryman.  "The driver of the car was transported I believe to Good Samaritan Hospital and is undergoing treatment right now. I don’t know the outcome of his injuries at this point."

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured in the crash.  Merryman said it’s unknown what caused the car to cross the median.  Interstate 70 eastbound was closed for hours as troopers investigated.  The Muskingum County Coroner was called to assist at the scene.  The name of the victim is not being released until her family is notified.
