The Zanesville and Newton Township Fire Departments are recognizing Fire Safety Month with a chili cook off.

Studio G in the Masonic Temple is hosting the inaugural contest.  Organizer Bob Grayson said about a dozen chili recipes will be judged to raise money for the fire departments.

"I want them to know that the art community appreciates all the things that they do," said Grayson.  "During this entire month, the art displays will be present for the public.  We want to continue to raise the awareness even more than just tonight."

The walls of the gallery are covered with photographs and paintings of firefighters serving their communities.  Grayson said nothing brings people closer together than a hearty bowl of chili.

"I’m older now so I don’t like mine spicy anymore, but I love to be able to taste something a little different than just tomatoes," said Grayson.  "If there’s something unique in it, I love chili that is one of a kind."

Organizers hope the event will become an annual tradition in Zanesville.
