Tuesday night WHIZ-TV presented a forum featuring candidates running for Muskingum County Commissioner.
Former Commissioner John Bates, Commissioner Steve Strauss and challenger Todd Sands participated in the forum. All three candidates answered questions relating to the closing of the Muskingum County Home, the sheriff’s response to the animal release and the effort to reduce crime in our area. Another hot topic was the idea to combine resources between Muskingum County and the city of Zanesville.
"That’s kind of a touchy situation," said John Bates. "We looked at that back when I was commissioner and we could never get it together for some reason. You have the county and the city, and the thought is good, but it’s going to take a lot of negotiation and teamwork for that to happen."
"I spoke with Mayor Jeff Tilton a few months back about this subject," said Todd Sands. "He made me aware that until 2016 the city is not able to combine jails. They’re in a legal obligation. They’re still paying for their jail so that’s not really an option until that time, but his comments were to me that we can start talking now."
"As I said before, I’m very interested in bringing things together," said Steve Strauss. "We worked very hard to get the 9-1-1 dispatching center and as we moved our sheriff’s office over and built that center, it’s one of the most state-of-the-art, which means that the services are very good."
WHIZ-TV will broadcast another forum at 7:30 Wednesday night. That discussion will bring together Commissioner Jerry Lavy and challenger Eddie Brock. Questions can be submitted to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
