Zanesville’s Veterans Day Parade is just under a month away.
Veterans Council President Bud Johnson says they are still accepting entry applications for the November 10th parade. There were 127 units in last years event, and Johnson says so far this year they have about half of that.
"There is a deadline on the paper and it’s like anything else, that would be the optimum thing, to have it in, but I take walk-ins." explained Johnson. "If you come in the day of the parade and if I’ve got a slot for you I’ll put you in it. I’ll find a slot for you if you want to be in it. If you want to honor the American veterans, I’ll find a slot for you."
Among those who have secured a spot in the parade are 12 scout troops and 3 high school bands. While the main focus of the parade is veterans, Johnson says there are other reason to take part in the fun.
"Come out and support the kids if you don’t want to support the veterans." urged Johnson. "If I had a parent for every child I’ve got out there, the streets would be full. Take some time, a couple of hours of a Saturday, and you can be home in time to watch your football game."
There will be a closing ceremony and 21 gun salute following the parade at the Muskingum County Courthouse. The Veterans Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at Secrest Auditorium. Three county veterans will be inducted into the hall of fame this year. If you would like to be involved call 740-454-6851.
