One local church celebrated a big milestone Sunday. Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Stovertown celebrated it’s bicentennial with church members from past and present.
"People who go here have 3rd, 4th, 5th generation of coming to this church, so we’re very excited about 200 years of sharing the word of God" said member Susan Sands.
Church members have been celebrating all year long, and Sunday’s event was an accumulation of the entire year of festivities. Former pastors came to preach, and the church hopes to be able to piece together the church’s history for all generations.
"Even though this is our 200th anniversary celebration, we’re continuing on throughout next year to collect the photos and memorabilia, hoping that we can build up a solid heritage and background for years to come, so that future generations can see what’s happened in the Stovertown community down along Route 555 at St. John’s Lutheran church in Stovertown." said Heather Sands
A quilt from 1931 was given to the church by a family whose roots belong to Stovertown. Church members are hoping others will step forward in the same way to shed light on the church’s history. Images given by the community will be digitized so there will be even more heritage to share when the church turns 250. Pictures from Sunday’s event can be found on the church’s website and Facebook page.
