A tragedy strikes New Lexington as one of its residents passes away in a fire.  It happened around 5 a.m.

Sheriff William Barker said 34-year-old Stacy Snellings never made it out of the home located at 4375 Township Road 149 just off of State Route 13. Her body was found in a bedroom. Stacy lived in the home with her mother, Millie.

"Her mother told us that’s where she could smell smoke coming from and went to that room and opened the door and couldn’t find her daughter because of the smoke. It was pretty intense at that time, the fire was," said Perry County Sheriff William Barker.

Barker said the Perry County Coroner Doctor Bradley Wilson ordered an autopsy on Snellings’ body and the State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.

"They’ve collected some samples that they’ll take back to analyze to conclude their investigation. They’ll generate a report and send it to my office," explained Barker.

Barker said a family member was involved in a car accident on the way to the scene. He wasn’t injured. The State Highway Patrol handled the crash and cited the man before releasing him.
