Thanksgiving is just three days away, and there are some safety precautions you should keep in mind before firing up your deep-fryer or oven to cook the traditional turkey meal.

When it comes to deep-frying your turkey, you need to make sure the turkey is not frozen. Dropping a frozen turkey into a deep fryer will likely cause an explosion and injury to anyone nearby, but that isn’t where the concerns end.

"Part of the problem with deep-frying is people will put too much oil in their fryer, and when they put the turkey in it overflows and it can ignite the flame that is heating the fryer " said Zanesville Fire Department firefighter Gayle Law.

Law says you should make sure the deep-fryer is on level ground and away from buildings and trees. When it comes to indoor cooking, you need to make sure you keep an eye on the meal you are preparing.

"Sometimes you don’t think about something that you’re boiling that’s got some grease in it, and it boils over and catches the stove top on fire." explained Law. "Most of your pan fires, you put a lid on it if it’s caught fire, [then] call the fire department and we’ll come and get rid of the smoke in your house."

Law also recommends keeping the number of people in the kitchen to a minimum while you’re cooking. He says the fire department does see an increase in cooking related fires this time of year.
