Select individuals were honored Friday morning, for going above and beyond their ordinary duties for the good of the community…

The Muskingum Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross held its 7th Hometown Heroes breakfast at North Terrace Church of Christ Friday morning. The heroes were chosen for exhibiting courage, compassion, and unselfishness in their chosen fields.

"We had 13 categories and 33 heroes. One of the categories was Public Safety and the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office was the winner for that. There was 21 of those," said Development Director Troy Alford.

Other categories included Health Care, Youth, and Education. The money raised at Friday’s event benefits the Red Cross’s Disaster Relief Fund.

"We serve five counties, and we have an average of 80 fires a year, and the cost for that is 500 to 1,000 dollars per house fire. So, today we were able to help a couple houses."

Just over 300 people attended Friday’s breakfast. The Red Cross hopes to raise about 16,000 dollars for the Relief Fund.
