Soon travelers will be taking to the skies and roadways all in an attempt to make it home for Christmas.

AAA said that 84.4 million travelers nationwide and 3.2 million Ohioans will take drive to their holiday destination. The auto club estimates that they’ll come to the rescue of at least 15,000 Ohioans in their 38 county territory between Saturday and January 1st. A AAA spokesperson said that most of the breakdowns could be prevented with simple maintenance.

"Make sure that you get your battery checked, make sure you check your tire pressure, make sure you get your fluid levels all topped off," said Public Relations Manager Kimberly Schwind. "Maybe take it into a technician before you hit the road and make sure your car is in working order and good shape."

While no one wants to spend time on the side of the roadway in case of breakdown make sure you have some safety items in your car.

"We recommend having a roadside assistance kit in your car and that can include a flashlight, some extra food and water, blankets, road flares, jumper cables and shovel," suggested Schwind. "Anything you might need if your stranded on the side of the road."

Schwind said last holiday season they were able to get half of the 12,000 people they helped back on the roadways without having to tow them.
