Runners laced up their tennis shoes and hit the pavement for a good cause.

On Saturday the Muskingum Family YMCA held the Zaney Reindeer 5K Run and 1 mile Fun Run/Walk at Vista Golf Course in Nashport.  Executive Director Craig Miracle said about 50 runners and walkers took advantage of the mild December day.

"The money that we raise will go toward our financial assistance and scholarship programs to provide opportunities to families and youth in the community," said Miracle.

Over the years, this event has generated over $9,000.  This year alone the YMCA has given away $38,000 in financial assistance.  The goal is to encourage New Year’s resolutions that stick, making changes in physical activity and eating habits rather than following a fad diet.

"We have people ages 8 to 63 here today, so we have a variety of folks," said Miracle.  "Basically we’re trying to promote healthy living and social responsibility."

Awards were presented to the top three male and female overall finishers as well as the top finisher in each age division.
