The bridge on Military Road near Bowers Lane is in need of replacement.
On Tuesday Zanesville City Council passed an ordinance to take on the project. Public Service Director Mike Sims said some right-of-way acquisition will be required.
"It’s a 2015 project and a pretty straightforward bridge replacement," said Sims. "It’s just a flat slab, a box beam type of bridge, so it’s not a very intricate installation. The existing bridge is showing a lot of scour, and it’s beginning to deteriorate to the point where we thought we needed to get it on the schedule for replacement."
The ordinance authorizes the city to enter into a local project agreement with the Ohio Department of Transportation for the estimated $352,000 bridge replacement.
"The city gets somewhere around $380,000 a year that needs to have a 20% local match, and that’s why one of the council members brought up the matching quantity," said Sims. "We’re preparing for this, and the Budget Director and the Mayor are in the loop. It’s money that we will have to secure, because it’s not anything that we have in the Street Department budget."
Council also amended a pension pick-up resolution involving members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
