The amount Americans spend on eating out is on the rise.
In the 1960 the Centers for Disease Control said 26 percent of money spent on food went to eating out. In 2011, 49 percent of the money spent on food went to eating out. One expert said that it’s important to make healthy choices when going to restaurants.
"The easiest thing to do is to avoid the all you can eat buffets," said WIC Project Coordinator Jody Shiver. "That’s because the more that’s there the more you are going to eat. Look for things that are steamed, grilled, baked not fried."
Shriver also suggests to bring food to work to avoid going out on your lunch hour. Items made at home can be healthier.
"If you are making them at home they are going to have less fat and a lot less sodium," explained Shriver. "When you go shopping you can stay to the outside aisles or avoid trigger foods, foods you know you are going to really really like or will eat a lot of."
Shriver also said to make sure you have fruits and vegetables with each meal and drink water instead of soda.
