Genesis Hospital is taking steps to protect its patients and employees in a crosswalk.

A new pedestrian flashing signal has been placed on Adair Avenue at the crosswalk between the Genesis-Good Samaritan parking lot and the Center for Occupational and Outpatient Rehabilitation Building. The new signal was a joint venture between the hosptial and the city of Zanesville and comes at no expense to the taxpayers.

"On each side of the street we have wirless push buttons that the pedestrians should push before they cross, with that they will operate the LED lights, they will flash and hopefully create awareness that traffic will yield to pedestrians," said Genesis Administrator, Dan Vincent.

The pedestrian law in Zanesville requires drivers to yield to anyone within a crosswalk. Due to the high volume of traffic in the area, pedestrians and drivers are both reminded to use caution.

"Right here, they need to just pay attention to what’s going on if a person’s in the crosswalk, yield to them, slow down pay attention to what they’re doing," said Zanesville Police Captain, Tony Coury.

This is the only crosswalk signal of it’s kind in Zanesville, depending on it’s success more may go up around town.
