A roadway in Zanesville will remain closed after a water main break Thursday morning.
Water crews said Pine Street between Merrick Avenue and Grove Street looked like a lake when they arrived on the scene around 2 a.m. a 12-inch section of a water main broke.
"We haven’t had too much problem this winter with some of our bigger ones. It’s been some of the 4,6,2 inch lines that have been breaking, but this is probably our biggest in a while," said John Smith City of Zanesville water metering and maitenance supervisor.
Unlike other breaks, Smith doesn’t believe this was caused by the freezing and thawing. He said this had more to do with pressure.
"There’s usually a sheer in the pipe when it’s due to freezing and thawing, but in this case it looks like maybe just tuberculation and the corrosion on the inside of the pipe that has weakened the inside," explained Smith.
Smith said the section of roadway will remain closed for at least a couple of days until they can put in concrete. Zanesville City Schools had to close Zane Grey Elementary, Zanesville Community High School, the preschool as a result of the break.
Smith said they hope to have all repairs made by 1p.m. Thursday.
