Warning to Property Owners

A warning is going out to homeowners in Muskingum County.

Some property owners received a letter in the mail from a Cleveland company claiming their property value is incorrect and that they’re paying too much in taxes. The county auditor said that reappraisals were just completed in October and November.

"That’s the reason we go through a reappraisal once every six years," explained Muskingum County Auditor Debra Nye. "It’s required by state statute by Ohio law and we actually hired a firm and they came in and reviewed every house."

Nye said that the company wants 50 percent of your tax savings, but doesn’t guarantee you will get any savings. She said if you feel your home is overvalued you can file a complaint with the board of revision for free.

"We review those based on the documentation presented by the property owner and also if an appraisal is submitted by an independent appraisal firm we take that into consideration," said Nye.

The auditor also has appraisers paid by their office that will come out and reappraise a home. Nye said to make sure and visit the auditor’s website to check your home’s information.
