The national service network, Americorps’ mission is, to create programs that engage Americans to help meet the nations needs in health or education.

In order to observe the upcoming Americorps Week, which starts on March 9th, the organization has developed a childrens’ book drive called ‘Sharing the Literacy’.

Gretchen Newsom and Roishell Cooper, Americorps College Completion Coaches said, " We feel that reading is extremely important for children and it starts when they are young and they need the tools in order to be able to do that and what better choice than books? And these books that are donated through the community, will be donated back into the community, to the schools to preschools to other non profit organizations. "

So far, there is a great response to the book drive at Zane State/ Ohio University Zanesville campus and hopefully will continue throughout the rest of the city due to the lack of library funds in our local schools.

"And I was just made aware that they have not had, West Muskingum, has not had a library budget for many years now and I didn’t know that and I was made aware that that happens a lot around here. "

If you would like to donate books for Pre-K through middle school ages, there are various drop off boxes at the campus and around town:

  • Zane State/Ohio University Zanesville
  • Welcome Center
  • Muskingum Opportunity Center
  • New Hope Full Gospel Church
  • Colony Square Mall
  • Muskingum Valley Health Center
