Healthcare System Supports Expansion

Local healthcare officials are pleased with the Ohio Governor John Kasich’s decision to expand Medicaid.

Genesis Healthcare supported the move to expand the service which will help 13,000 people in their six county area, who wouldn’t have coverage otherwise.

Genesis CEO Matt Perry said that by providing Medicaid it will allow these people to have a primary care physician.

"It gives the ability to do preventive services if you haven’t been to the doctor in 10 years or if you only go to the doctor when you get sick you’re not taking care of things before they become big issues," said Perry.

Those having a primary care physician also won’t be bogging down the hospitals for simple illnesses. Per year Ohio’s hospitals provide $1.2 billion in services to the uninsured. This will help cut some of that cost.

"We in essence do cost shifting to those that have insurance to cover the people who don’t," said Perry. "That’s an economic reality of healthcare all over the U.S.. If we don’t have a source of revenue for people that don’t have insurance it allows us to have a downward impact on the cost of coverage for everybody else," explained Perry.

Perry said they’ll continue to work with the legislators to get Medicaid expansion passed.
