The dream of Muskingum County having its own recreation center is closer to becoming a reality.
The Muskingum Recreation Center is set to be completed by spring 2014. The project broke ground in November near Littick Hall on the Ohio University-Zanesville/Zane State Campus. After some changes to the floorplan, construction is once again running right on time.
"Once we started into the planning process and looking at some of the numbers as far as how many members we could accommodate, how any people we could accommodate we really needed to shift a little bit of the funds to incorporate what we really needed the first day that we opened which is an expanded fitness floor and an eight lane competition pool to be able to accommodate what we really felt we needed," said Recreation Center Executive Director, Beth Chapman.
There are some major renovations that need to be done to Littick Hall in order to make the center exactly how they want it but to do so, some funds are still required.
"We will be renovating Littck Hall but not to the scale that we want so we have a couple of alternates we continue to raise funds for so we are continuing that fundraising effort," said Chapman.
Some fundraising options they have in mind are hard-hat tours through the construction area this spring and speaking to groups around the county about the good the recreation center will bring to our area.
