Experts See Busy Start to Hiring

Job experts said they’re seeing a busy start to hiring in this new year.

At the Muskingum County Opportunity Center they expect to take 500-600 applications for 12 open positions at Kellogg’s. In the first two hours of taking applications on Wednesday, 150 people filled out forms. Experts said that it’s usually not until spring that they start hearing about open positions, but it seems to have come early this year.

"It really started about the second week of January and so we’ve been taking applications for distribution type jobs," said Bob Mercer executive director of the Opportunity Center. "There’s probably a lot more possibilities then in the last couple of years."

For those looking for employment this summer, hiring may not start until May, but there are ways to prepare.

"If they have a resume make sure it’s been updated and if they don’t have a resume they are welcome to come in and we have a resume program on our computers where they can develop their own resume," said Mercer.

Mercer said those coming in to apply for Kellogg’s can do so Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Expect the process to take about an hour.
