There’s concern in Dresden that an arsonist is targeting the village’s buildings.
Tuesday morning just before 6, the Dresden Fire Department was called to a structure fire in a large building once used for storage behind 511 Main Street.
When crews arrived the fire was heavily involved in the roof and attic area. The roof had started to collapse. Due to the danger, crews from Dresden, Frazeysburg and Falls Township Fire Departments had to battle the blaze from outside the building.
"If we can get in where the root of the fire is we can normally knock it down pretty quick," said Dresden Fire Chief Carl Archer. "When it gets up into the attic areas they are difficult to get and very dangerous."
Due to the nature of the fire Chief Archer called in the Muskingum County Sheriff’s Office and State Fire Marshal to investigate. The State Fire Marshal is working to determine how the first started and where.
Chief Archer said he believes it began on the east end of the structure between the buildings.
This isn’t the first suspicious fire the village has had this year.
"This is the second or third suspicious fire this year," said Chief Archer. "Two others were determined to be arson and this is very suspicious. Back in 2009-2010 we had quite a few fires. All of them right in this area."
Chief Archer said it is possible that the same person is responsible for all the fires and hopes that they catch whoever is responsible soon. Two firefighters suffered injuries during the fire. One suffered a burn and the other a knee injury after he slipped on ice.
