Crane Fire on SR 668

Authorities said a crane being transported to Zanesville for a construction project caught fire.

The trucks driver Craig Bisset said he was driving the self powered crane to a job site when he noticed the vehicle smoking and saw sparks. He was on State Route 668 near Brownsville when he said he stopped the vehicle and quickly got away. He then called the fire department.

"My people when they got here had a fully involved fire," said Chief Ted McNamara. "The tires started to explode so they started to call for additional help and we brought in four departments to try and contain this."

Due to the exploding tires crews attacked the blaze from the front and rear of the structure.

"It posses a hazard if you are near the tires," said McNamara. "The tires are going to make a lot of noise and are going to make a big boom. As long as you aren’t near them it’s probably not going to hurt you."

The chief said he estimates damage to be around $3 million. Bisset said that the crane is three years old and believes a faulty hydraulic line may have caused the fire, but isn’t sure.

The Ohio EPA was called in to check the scene, but Chief McNamara said the diesel was contained.
