The Adamsville Fire Department was presented the check to help the department purchase new equipment like self-contained breathing apparatus’, protective clothing and communications equipment.

"The Division of State Fire Marshall Department of Commerce is proud to have the training and equipment grant program with 1.6 million dollars that we distribute to smaller departments across the state," said State Fire Marshall, Larry Flowers.

Fire department’s that received the grants were chosen based on different criteria including the fire department’s budget, the population of the community and how many fires occur. The state Fire Marshal is also participating in a listening tour across the state to talk to local fire departments and elected officials about improvement ideas and any concerns that they have.

"We just really appreciate what the State Fire Marshal has done to help us out," said Adamsville Fire Department Chief Whortman.

Chief Whortman says he and the department wouldn’t be able to afford new equipment without the grant.
